Sweet Babe, sang she

Sweet Babe, sang she (2021)
Soprano solo or semichorus and SATB chorus unaccompanied

This colourful Christmas carol is an expressive portrait of the traditional Nativity scene. While the chorus sing an ostinato lullaby in the background, the solo soprano (or semichorus) sings reflectively in the foreground. Passages of gentle ‘alleluias’ make contrasting interludes for all voices together.
The words are taken from the Lute Book Lullaby – a song with lute accompaniment from a collection made by William Ballet in the seventeenth century.

Sweet babe, sang she was first performed in concert by The Houston Chamber Choir, Texas, director Robert Simpson, in December 2022.
