Winter Variations (1998) for cello and piano
14 mins: Grade 8+
Winter Variations is a journey from winter to spring – from minor to major. At times grandiose, at times capricious, it is not a direct journey but a tortuous one, through treacherous winds and icy sun, through winter’s beauty and spring’s calm.
This virtuosic, dramatic and exciting single-movement piece was commissioned by Tunbridge Wells International Young Concert Artists and first performed by Jamie Walton (cello) and Daniel Grimwood (piano) on 3rd April 1998, and also toured by Oliver Ray (cello) and Ian Ray (piano) during the 2018-19 season.
