He will speak peace (1992)
SATB, solo mezzo-soprano/treble, and organ
He will speak peace is a setting of two verses from Psalm 85, and it was written and performed for the 350thanniversary of the founding of Lion Walk United Reformed Church, Colchester: 1642-1992. The year 1992 was also the 100th anniversary of the birth of Alan Bullard’s teacher Herbert Howells, and this anthem is dedicated to his memory and ends with a characteristic Howells cadence. The expressive and calm setting also incorporates ‘Song 1’ by Orlando Gibbons (‘Eternal Ruler of the ceaseless round’) – mainly in the organ part, with the choir taking up and developing the hymn-tune in the final bars, to the words ‘Mercy and truth are met together, righteousness and peace have kissed each other’.
`A tenderness and appeal which goes straight to the heart: warmly recommended for any occasion’ – Michael Fleming, Church Music Quarterly
