The Painting Room

The Painting Room

In 1987 Alan Bullard collaborated with the poet Kevin Crossley Holland and the painter John Addyman to  make a film for Anglia Television in the ‘Folio’ series, based on the ‘Constable Country’, and specifically Flatford Mill, on the Essex/Suffolk border. The film set out to show the reaction of the three creative artists to the paintings of John Constable and to the landscape that inspired him.

Alan Bullard wrote a number of pieces and songs (settings of poems by Kevin Crossley-Holland) for use in the film, and they can be heard here in a complete recording made before they were edited for the film itself. They are:

The Language of Light (baritone and piano)
Like light that gilds (baritone and piano)
Every stile and stump (baritone and cello)
The Mill Stream (flute, cello, piano)
The Church Porch (alto flute, cello, piano)
Flatford Holiday (flute, cello, piano) – also separate recording here
Reflections (cello, piano) based on paintings of John Addyman – also separate recording here
