Mersey Reflections

Mersey Reflections (2026)
treble recorder, oboe, string quartet
or treble recorder, oboe, piano
duration 3’30”

Mersey Reflections was written in 2026 in memory of John Turner’s wife, Margaret. The version with string quartet was first recorded by John Turner, Richard Simpson, and the New World String Quartet; and the version with piano was first performed by the same wind players at a concert in Sale, Manchester, on 18 June 2026.

A conversation between recorder and oboe, supported by busy strings, it pictures the origins of the River Mersey from the various streams and rivers flowing from the heights of Derbyshire’s Peak District, joining together in Stockport (the Turner’s home town) before making its way westward to the sea at Liverpool. It is also available in an arrangement for recorder, oboe, and piano.

Excerpt of the version with string quartet, which will be available on a commercial CD later in 2026:
