Journey Through Time (2010)
woodwind ensemble with optional flute and clarinet ensemble: duration:c.15 mins.
Commissioned by the Bloomsbury Woodwind Ensemble, conductor Shea Lolin, this work provides an opportunity for contrast between the two ensembles. It is a single-movement work in a number of sections and is loosely based on some of the creation stories, but it ends with a mysterious final section in which the musical material unravels, taking us back to the dark chaos of the opening. Throughout, the flute and clarinet ensemble provide a commentary and link between the sections. It can also be performed without the flute and clarinet ensemble as the parts are cued into the main ensemble. Standard approx. ABRSM Grade 8.
Scoring 3 flutes (1 doubling picc), 2 oboes, 3 clarinets, bass clarinet, 2 alto sax, 1 tenor sax, 1 baritone sax, 1 bassoon: optional ensemble, two flutes, 2 clarinets (all with divisions)
First Performance, St John’s Smith Square, 27 November 2010
