Canonic Proverbs

Canonic Proverbs (2013)
soprano (or tenor) and recorders (one player)

Composed for John Turner in celebration of his 70th birthday, and first performed by Lesley-Jane Rogers (soprano) and the dedicatee, in Southwold, Suffolk.
Each of the four movements contains one or more proverbs set as a canon between voice and recorder.
1. Prologue (voice, bass recorder) ‘Youth is wasted on the young
2. Some Animals (voice, tenor recorder)  ‘A cat may look at a king’
3. Some Don’ts (voice, treble recorder) ‘Don’t rock the boat’
4. The Question (voice, descant recorder) ‘There are two sides to every question’
